Local Boy Scout Organizes Blood Drive for Little Girl with Cancer

14-year-old Scooter Brownlee may sound like a broken record but he doesn't care.

He's asking everybody that walks by the Blood Center of the Brazos Valley donor bus one simple question, "Will you donate some blood?"

Sometimes he gets a bite, but not all the time.

Scooter is leading the charge at this blood drive for one reason.

"We're holding a blood drive for a 7-year-old girl who was diagnosed with cancer just over a year ago," said Brownlee.

Sadie Murata is that 7-year-old. Sadie lives in San Antonio and despite the fact her and Scooter have never met, the boy scout is braving the rain to bring in the blood.

"She's been going through several rounds of chemotherapy and the only reason she is still here is through the blood transfusions she's been getting," said Brownlee.

"He contacted us and wanted to do it so we obliged," said Aurelio Cadena with the Blood Center.

Cadena is holding up his part of the bargain by collecting the blood, but he's still taken back by the act.

"It's impressive! At 14, I was worried who to play with at school," said Cadena.

"It's either lie on the couch or lie on this couch," joked A&M Junior Bob Cline about donating blood.

Cline came aboard the bus to show his support.

"This is definitely beyond something that I would expect from the Cub Scouts. There is a lot of ambition on his part," said Cline.

Just don't confuse this boy scout for a cub scout.

"Cubs scouts are this tall," said Brownlee after accidentally being called a cubs scout.

Scooter along with members of Boy Scout Troop 317 had to jump through several hoops to make this blood drive happen. And they did it all for Sadie.

"People don't normally think of kids being able to do something this big," said Brownlee.

"Scooter is the man," said Cadena.

The blood drive in honor of Sadie Murata will continue on Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in front of the Duncan Dining Center on the Texas A&M campus.

Sadie is hoping to make an appearance at the blood drive on Wednesday and finally get a chance to meet Scooter.
