Hundreds of local residents are fighting for justice for 17-year-old Trayvon Martin who was killed back in February allegedly by a neighborhood watch volunteer.
Police say the Florida teenager was unarmed and wearing a hooded sweat shirt at the time of the incident.
Local residents decided to show their support for Martin by lighting up candles and wearing their hooded sweatshirts at Sue Haswell Park in Bryan.
"Unless I am committing a crime, I shouldn't be killed. I shouldn't be followed. I shouldn't be chased down because of my race, because of my attire. I shouldn't be questioned based on those things,” said Deliah Childs, a Bryan resident.
Childs is among the many Bryan residents who believe TrayVon Martin was gunned down because of his attire and race. She is with D.E.V.A, a local organization for women, who organized the event.
"I have a nephew that I have bought hoodies for. I have a nephew that walks around and if it is raining, he does put it on. One day do I have to question if he is walking outside or walking to a friend’s house, that he might be murdered,” Childs said.
Walkie Parnell has the same fear for her two young boys.
"It's a free country. You should be able to walk around and wear whatever you want to wear, and I feel unsafe. I kind of don't want my son to wear a hoodie,” Parnell said.
Although it hasn't been proven in court, some protesters believe this fatal incident was racial discrimination. They are calling for the arrest of George Zimmerman who is the neighborhood watchman that allegedly shot and killed Martin.
