Truck vs 18 Wheeler Accident Shuts Down Highway 6

COLLEGE STATION, Texas A major accident along Highway 6 near William D. Fitch had northbound lanes shut down for several hours.

The accident happened around 1 p.m. Wednesday. Bart Humphries with the College Station Fire Department said six people and three vehicles were involved in the crash.

Humphries said some maintenance work on the highway caused traffic to slow down.

"One of the vehicles involved noticed a pickup truck was not slowing down," said Humphries. "They moved to the left to get out of the way and the rear of their vehicle was clipped by the pickup."

Humphries said the pickup then slammed head on into the rear end of an 18-wheeler.

It took fire crews about 20 minutes, using the Jaws of Life, to get the 22-year-old driver of the pickup truck out of his vehicle. He was then rushed to the hospital.

"At this time, we're not sure of his condition. He was conscious the whole time," said Humphries. "They actually had to, what we call, roll the dash. Push the dash forward, and push the front part of the truck forward in order to make room to stabilize the patient so we could move him out."

Southbound lanes of Highway 6 were reduced to one lane for about an hour. Northbound lanes were completely shut down for most of the afternoon. They were reopened just after 5 p.m.

Humphries said no one else was seriously hurt.
