Montgomery County Auto Theft Task Force, the South East Texas Auto Theft Task Force-Beaumont, and the Department of Public Safety CID-Beaumont, have made an arrest in a seven month long investigation. Melvin L. Cupp of Humble, Texas was arrested for Felony Theft and is currently in the Montgomery Jail on a bond of $500,000.
Investigators with the Montgomery County ATTF initiated an investigation with the Splendora Police Department after Allied Power Mart in Splendora was burglarized in August 2012. The investigation lead to areas outside of Montgomery County and with the cooperation of DPS and ATTF members, Melvin Cupp was arrested in Houston yesterday after being charged with the theft of power tools and tractors from Allied Power Mart.
During a search of Cupp’s home in the Humble area, multiple power tools believed to be stolen were recovered.
Investigators believe that Cupp could be responsible for numerous similar crimes across the Central, Gulf Coast, and Eastern portions of Texas.
Lt. David Moore with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office ATTF believes that the vast geographical area involved was instrumental and added to the complexity of the investigation and acknowledges that the cooperation with other police agencies was critical to bring about the arrest.
