College Station Police arrested James Chittwood, 20 early Sunday for providing false statements to officers conducting an investigation.

Police said Chittwood lied to police and claimed an unknown black male had forcefully taken his keys and was driving his vehicle when it crashed near the entrance to Campus Village Apartments off of Southwest Parkway. Chittwood reported the accident around 3:27 a.m. Sunday. When police questioned Chittwood in person, he appeared to be under the influence. Chittwood later admitted he completely fabricated the story to avoid "getting in trouble" for consuming alcohol and was actually the driver of the vehicle during the accident.

Chittwood was held Sunday in the Brazos County Jail on $3,000 bond.
