Meteorologist: Weather Radios are Life Savers

Updated: Thu 1:36 PM, Mar 07, 2013

If severe weather hits in the middle of the night, meteorologists say weather radio technology is the best way to stay safe.

“It’s not very common across the country that you see severe weather in the middle of the night. Here in the Brazos Valley, it’s possible because we're close to the Gulf of Mexico,” said News 3 Meteorologist Shel Winkley.

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood watch in our area, and it will be in effect through Wednesday evening. News 3 Meteorologists say there's a slight chance that a flood watch could turn into a tornado watch overnight.

“We'll either be here on KBTX.com, or on Twitter, or on air if it’s a tornado warning. But most folks aren't going to know that because you're sleeping in the middle of the night,” said Winkley.

That's why meteorologists across the country say weather radios are a good investment.

“There are many cases of a night time tornado coming through a town. People with weather radios hear that alert,” said Dan Reilly, Warning Coordination Meteorologist for the National Weather Service.

Reilly says good weather radios run at about $30 dollars. Radios with S.A.M.E. technology allow people to pick which areas they’d like to get alerts for.

“They will turn themselves on, sound the alert, and let you know there's an alert for your county,” said Reilly.

There are also apps to get severe weather alerts, but meteorologists say actual radios are still the most trusted technology.

“It’s not uncommon for the notification you get on your cell phone to have originated from information from a weather radio, said KBTX Digital Media Manager Thomas Miller.

It doesn't matter if you get your information from a radio or a smart phone...as long as you have the information when you need it.
