Three children were killed Tuesday night in Concord after their mobile home caught fire.
“Our first instinct is to always save lives,” said Marquez Firefighter, Mark Wacasey. “But we didn't make it this time."
A fire swept through a mobile home on County Road 391 in Concord as a family of five lay sound asleep.
“When we got here the mobile home was pretty much fully engulfed except for the back of it," said Wacasey.
Tammy and Ray Fulton told authorities they could barely breathe after thick black smoke consumed the master bedroom Tuesday night. As the two rushed out of the room, first responders tell us powerful flames hindered the Fulton’s attempt to rescue their three girls who were sleeping in the bedroom located at the front of the house.
“Everybody suited up and we had people prepared to go inside,” said Wacasey.
Mark Wacasey of the Marquez Fire Department was one of the first responders on scene Tuesday night.
“We couldn't get in there [front bedroom] with all the flames,” Wacasey recalled.
As firefighters extinguished the fully engulfed home, Wacasey says -- by the time they were able to reach the front of the house -- it was too late. Three girl -- age two, four and only four-months-old -- died.
“We had it under control in about 15 or 20 minutes and then it took a couple of hours to make sure everything was put out,” said Wacasey. “We just didn’t get there in time to save the girls.”
Neighbors, relatives, and now -- a family of two -- watched as State Fire Marshals, including Leon County Sheriff's Investigators scoured the smoldering scene Wednesday afternoon; trying to figure out how it all began.
“I have two children myself, and I couldn't imagine,” said Wacasey.
Two people are now left facing an unimaginable reality: their three baby girls are gone.
“It’s so hard to imagine if you’re not going through it, but this mother and the whole family, they’re going through a real hard time right now,” Wacasey explained.
The American Red Cross is assisting the family.
An account has been set up at Wells Fargo Bank if you'd like to help the family offset funeral expenses, you can make a monetary donation to any Wells Fargo Bank. That account is under “Fulton Girls” and the deposit number is: 1494976465.
