NAVASOTA Keep Texas Beautiful announced Navasota as one of nine Second Place winners of the 2012/2013 Governor’s Community Achievement Award (GCAA) for outstanding community improvement. The honor recognizes Navasota with one of the most celebrated annual environmental and community improvement awards in Texas.
Communities submitted materials to one of nine population categories and judges chose the winners based on their achievements in seven environmental and community improvement areas: community leadership and coordination, education, public awareness, litter prevention and cleanup, illegal dumping enforcement, beautification and property improvement, and solid waste management. Among some of the accomplishments were the 11th Annual Trash Off, the City of Navasota’s City Wide Garage Sale, ‘Operation Clean it Up’ Campus Beautification Day, Electronic Waste Disposal Event, Community Outreach at local events and within schools, and continued efforts made by the Code Enforcement Department.
Keep Navasota Beautiful and the City of Navasota also worked with many local organizations, youth groups, and civic clubs to collaborate together on a variety of beautification and property improvement projects: 5,247 hours of volunteer service hours were documented toward beautification projects in the community. The Navasota Recycle Station saw a 40% increase in patrons with a total of 1,090 users. Fifty tons of paper, plastic, cardboard and glass were accepted which is a 100% increase of recyclable material from 2011!
