Navasota Streetscape Project Happening Downtown

NAVASOTA, Texas Downtown Navasota is showing signs of change with millions of dollars in renovation to city streets.

News 3 looks at what's new in Navasota.

Signs of change are all over LaSalle Street in the shadows of Navasota City Hall.

The latest and last phase of street improvements are happening now downtown.

"The city worked hard on making sure it was done right and it's nice, it's really eye appealing now," said Steve Austin.

He owns the Computer Specialist store and has been in business downtown 18 years.

Construction finished at his doorfront a year ago and is now happening just down the corner.

"They're focusing everything back on the downtown area. It's been a great thing. It's been a great thing for Navasota I think people really enjoy it," he added.

Work has been delayed due to some recent rains but the project is still scheduled to be completed sometime this summer.

Brad Stafford is City Manager and says a new water main was put in Tuesday with new concrete coming.

"They'll be replacing sidewalk. They'll be putting in paver bands into sidewalks. They'll be putting in some islands along Washington Avenue with some landscaping," said Stafford.

Mayor Bert Miller said the streetscaping started three years ago after the new city hall opened.

"We've already seen results of it as far as tourism and our businesses that really like the improvements as well," said Miller.

Peter Canney is Mayor Pro Tem and also is administrator for his wife's medical practice right by the construction.

New wheelchair ramps and ADA accessibility will be a big bonus for their business, while visitors will benefit too.

"Everybody come on and visit Navasota and enjoy what we have to offer and there's more to come," said Canney.

More in store for the Blues Capital of Texas.

The next big event in Downtown Navasota is Blues, Bluebonnets and Barbecue.

That's happening Saturday, April 12th.

The whole project including a new city hall came from a bond package worth $10 million.
