Dozens of local residents have made an important decision about their neighborhood that could change the face of south College Station.
The city is getting closer to finalizing plans of the 4-mile Lick Creek Greenway hike and bike trail.
For Carley Maxwell the surroundings of her home will be changing because Lick Creek flows behind her house, and the city just got the ok to build a trail alongside it.
"It frustrates me. I realize the city is trying to do improvement all around as far as having a trail system that people can use in the community, but when it affects your backyard, it's hard to swallow,” said Maxwell.
She and 195 other homeowners live in the Springbrook community. It's a neighborhood that intersects with the city's plans to build a 4-mile trail. The trail will follow Lick Creek between Westfield Park/Creek View Elementary and Lick Creek Park.
The members of the Springbrook Homeowners Association voted on whether the trail will be built alongside a sidewalk or Lick Creek.
The HOA owns the Lick Creek Greenway, and the majority of the homeowners voted to convey the land to the city to allow them to build the trail along the creek.
Gary Ives is the president of the HOA, and he has sent out letters to residents like Maxwell informing the community about the results from the vote.
He believes building the trail along the sidewalk would be dangerous.
"We have concerns about our safety both for our own residents and for the folks who would be using it from outside our neighborhood because of the number of street crossings they would have,” said Ives.
The HOA is now in negotiation with the College Station officials to address issues of privacy, safety and preservation in the neighborhood before handing over the acreage to the city.
