New Culvert Hopes to Ease Water on MLK During Heavy Rain

BRYAN When strong storms move into Bryan, residents along West Martin Luther King worry about street flooding. Now, thanks to a City of Bryan project, residents along West MLK don't have to worry about flooding as much.

"It's a difference," says E.E. Garvin.

He lives at the corner of Harlem and West Martin Luther King. Garvin has been in the same spot for over 50 years. He knows that MLK is important. It connects the city to places like Kemp Elementary.

"It's a drag strip, too," laughs Garvin.

Residents along West Martin Luther King know that when it rains the street can flood. That makes it impassible. The city of Bryan knows that as well. That's why they've invested nearly $400,000 and a new culvert to help ease the flood waters and ease the residents concerns.

"The water come in, from both that way and this way and it all comes down to this part," describes Garvin. The water rushes right towad Garvin's house.

"Most of the change is in the culvert itself," explains Brett McCully. He's the Assistant City Engineer for Bryan. He has seen the difference.

"I've been out several times through several of the rain fall events taking pictures and such. So far, it's doing what it's supposed to do," says McCully.

So that next time when the rains come, homes along MLK don't get damaged. Because residents like Garvin plan on being here a while longer.

"Just you and the creek," I ask.

"And the lord," laughs Garvin.

The new culvert took about a year to build. The city says it's looking at other trouble spots around the city to work on next.
