Bryan The City of Bryan is implementing a new traffic signal display to provide a safer, more efficient left turn for motorists. The first Flashing Yellow Arrow (FYA) turn signal will be activated on Thursday, May 23, at the intersection of Briarcrest Drive and Country Club Drive. This work is part of a $5 million TxDOT project on Briarcrest Drive that also includes turn lanes, center median, sidewalks and new traffic signals at several intersections.
"The flashing yellow arrow is a relatively new strategy that has only been implemented in a handful of cities in Texas," says Dale Picha, director of traffic and transportation for the City of Bryan. "Installing the flashing yellow arrow in current light systems will improve traffic flow and, most importantly, driver safety."
The FYAleft-turn signal replaces the circular green indicator for left turns at selected intersections. The FYA cautions drivers to yield to oncoming traffic when making a left-hand turn before proceeding through the intersection.
By late August, the following intersections on Briarcrest Drive will be equipped and operating with FYAs:
-Briarcrest Drive and Oak Ridge Drive,
-Briarcrest Drive and Freedom Boulevard, and
-Briarcrest Drive and Kent Street.
Bryan joins the cities of San Antonio, Houston, Waco, Tyler and College Station, who have all instituted the FYA with success. The City will also be implementing FYAs at other locations in town as part of TxDOT upgrade projects.
FYAs are being introduced throughout the United States, and national studies have shown that drivers make fewer mistakes with the new signals than with traditional traffic signals. FYAs are also more efficient, providing traffic engineers with more options to handle variable traffic volumes.
