After being under stringent water restrictions since August of last year, the City of Burton’s new water well went on line Monday morning.

The new 925 foot deep well was drilled near the town’s city hall on Spur 125 in Washington County.

Last year after the collapse of the town's existing well, Burton Mayor Peggy Felder declared a local state of disaster and with the support of county officials asked for funding assistance from the state’s Division of Emergency Management.

The total cost of drilling Burton’s new well and construct a water plant was $495,000. To help pay for the project, State Representative Lois Kolkhorst help the city apply for and receive a $250,000 grant .

In addition, the well was also paid for through donations from local residents, organizations, business and a Combination Tax and Revenue Certificate of Obligation from Burton State Bank.
