We have new details on the future of what some call a big eyesore in College Station. The 17-story Plaza hotel will be remodeled, and buildings around the facility are going to be demolished.
The layout for the piece of land on the corner of University Drive and Texas Avenue will be changing drastically.
"Visually what it looks like is very important to us, and obviously right now boarded up and broken up windows and stuff is certainly not what we want," said Bob Cowell, director of Planning and Development at College Station.
Cowell has been working with Woodridge Capital Partners, the developers taking on the job of giving the 12-acre property a makeover.
"Our intention is to completely and effectively redevelop that building. Everything from re-skinning it to to effectively redoing the entire interior of the building so at the end of the day while the structure may remain or the shell, it's going to be an entirely new building," said Michael Rosenfeld, the CEO of Woodbridge Capital Partners.
It's not just the Plaza Hotel that will see changes.
Cowell received a zoning request from the company so they can build several amenities including restaurants and shops. More than 600 apartment units are expected to provide homes to not only students but faculty and young professionals. There are plans of a parking garage and nightclub and cottages on the northwest side of the property.
The developers say they will be able to fit everything on the property by building several multi-story buildings around the Plaza Hotel.
Turning around the vacant, old Plaza Hotel and surrounding area is something the Woodridge Capital Partners say they are committed to do to turn this blot into College Station's new beauty.
