In less than a month, one of College Station tallest towers and biggest eyesores will be demolished.

But before the Plaza Hotel comes down on May 24th, some nearby businesses are being briefed on how they can prepare for the big bang.

Demolition crews are continuing to gut the Plaza Hotel for the implosion of the vacant building and several area businesses including the Exxon, and Coldwell Banker will be evacuated when the building comes down around 6:30 A.M. on Thursday, May 24th.

Bits and pieces of the Plaza Hotel are slowly disappearing already as crews from Precision Demolition remove all the furnishings and windows from the 17 story highrise before it can be filled with explosives next month.

Victoria Perez with the Super 8 Motel will have a front row seat to the action across Texas Avenue. They'll be staying open the day the tower tumbles down.

"So we're actually going to sit there and probably close off our entrance and everything so that we don't have a bunch of people parking in our parking lot," said Perez.

In her six years at Super 8 she's seen firsthand how the once great Plaza Hotel has fallen apart. Her mom even worked there years ago when it was dorms.

"You just had so many come in from that place because they didn't have hot water, they didn't have heat, so I mean it's just gradually gone down," she added.

Sonic sits beneath the shadows of the doomed hotel where Managing Partner Jacob Rickman tells us they'll be closed for a few hours that May morning expecting to be covered in dust and debris.

"The night before we'll be taping up credit card machines just making sure our lots are all covered our speakers are all covered. But besides that it'll be just a normal week for us," said Rickman.

They expect to be back open for business and have the roads reopened by 9 that morning after demolition crews assist with the cleanup.

Hundreds to potentially thousands of people are expected to see the Plaza's demise in person.

"I think it'll be a real interesting thing to see and real cool thing to watch," said Rickman.

A viewing area is expected to be put it place near the site for the public to see for free but we don't have an exact location yet.

We're told it will only take about 7 seconds to bring this massive building down.

A public meeting on the implosion is planned for May, although no date has been set yet.

Starting about 4:30 the morning of May 24th, there will be detours around University Drive and Texas Avenue until about 9 a.m.
