A New Waverly coach was assaulted over the weekend after interrupting what law enforcement believe was an attempted burglary at the high school field house.
According to the Walker County Sheriff’s Office, powerlifting coach Mike Carolan was jumped and stabbed by four black males in their mid 20s around 9:40 p.m. Saturday night at New Waverly High School. Carolan had returned from the state powerlifting meet in Corpus Christi earlier in the day and went to the field house to get a set of keys. Law enforcement believe that the coach walked in on an attempted burglary and that is why he was attacked.
Carolan was taken to Huntsville Memorial Hospital and released early Sunday morning. He suffered a concussion and cuts and bruises.
“He is fine and going to be OK,” said Darol Hail, New Waverly ISD’s interim superintendent, on Monday. “He returned to work this morning. He probably should have stayed home, but he wanted to get back to work. We are glad that he is OK.”
The Sheriff’s Office is still investigating the attack and searching for the suspects. Anyone with any information is urged to contact the Walker County Crime Stoppers at (936) 294-9494.
