In case you missed it earlier this week, our own Shane McAuliffe is competing in the H-E-B Slim Down Showdown.
It's a state wide competition with 25 contestants, all hoping to get the healthiest for a $10,000 grand prize.
But before you can eat healthy, you have to buy healthy groceries. That's exactly what Shane did with his registered dietitian.
Here are a few things Shane learned during his shopping trip:
-Spend a lot time in the produce section.
-Buy a lot of greens and simply mix them in your salad.
-It's suggested that you have five servings of vegetables a day, but nine is divine and 11 is Heaven.
-The more color, the better.
-Buy seasonings made without salt. Look for zero sodium.
-When purchasing bread, look for whole grains.
-Ground turkey is good, salmon is great, and if you're craving red meat get 96% lean hamburger meat or even pork loin.
For Shane, limiting his diet to around 2,000 calories and exercising five days a week will help him lose weight during the H-E-B Slim Down Showdown.
Remember you can cheer on Shane, follow his progress, or leave him a motivational message on the H-E-B Slim Down Showdown website at www.heb.com/slimdown
