BRYAN, Texas Dozens of poets from around the nation were in downtown Bryan Friday night, battling it out with words for a chance to win a title and some cash.

The Texas Grand Slam Poetry Festival kicked off around 6 p.m. Friday at the Grand Stafford Theater in downtown Bryan. Poets were also found reciting at the Palace Theater and Revolution bar. The event will wrap up Saturday night at the Palace Theater.

The festival is sponsored by Mic Check Poetry, a Bryan area non-profit group. According to the group's website, their purpose is to connect an active group of readers, writers and critics of ally types of poetry to the area.

Officials with the event said this year, the event will feature 42 poets from around the nation.

Bill Moran with Mic Check said the first night of poetry was a semi-final round, with the winners advancing to the Saturday night show at the Palace Theater.

"It's usually a great show. Very entertaining," said Moran.

Moran said the cost of admission is money well spent.

"I always walk out with some line in my head that I won't forget," said Moran. "So it's definitely worth coming out to hear these people."

Organizers for the event said this is the largest annual slam poetry festival in the state.

The last poet standing will take home $1200.
