Bryan police say they are seeing an increase in drug activity at a local park next to an elementary school.

Austin's Colony Park in east Bryan is right next to Harvey Mitchell Elementary School. Investigators say they have caught suspects using and selling drugs in the drug free zone.

"I see them all over the place. Sometimes hidden behind the trees,” said Jason Neill, a Bryan resident who plays basketball at Austin’s Colony Park. "There are people over there doing drugs.”

"Usually we don't want to stay out here too late to where most of the stuff does happen. We don't want to be involved,” said Ryan Lopez who plays basketball at the park.

"As the evening hours come along, we tend to find people who might be doing drugs or alcohol,” said Officer Jon Agnew with the Bryan Police Department.

In the middle of a bright afternoon, we spotted some suspicious people who were later taken into custody for possession of marijuana.

"No one knows what you are doing back here. You could be playing Frisbee Golf or something and you can be doing drugs or doing a drug transaction,” said Officer Agnew.

"Personally I don't feel safe, but if I am with friends because I'm sure they will not come near us,” said Neill.

Investigators say they busted three people smoking pot behind trees which was close to where Neill was playing basketball.

"We are seeing a pattern here where we are arresting people for illicit activity, so we definitely want to increase our patrol,” said Officer Agnew.

Investigators say suspects face a higher punishment if they are caught in a drug-free zone like a park or school zone.

If you see any illegal activity at any park, you are asked to call police immediately.
