Public Gives Input To BISD Rezoning Proposal

Updated: Tue 4:33 AM, Jan 15, 2013

The Bryan Independent School District is closer to figuring out the future of a proposal that could change where many students go to high school.

The school district is considering redrawing attendance zones for Bryan High and Rudder High. Tonight the school district held a public hearing to find out what parents think about the proposed changes.

The superintendent, school board, teachers and parents were all in attendance at the public hearing.

Just a few parents stood up to ask questions like Cable Kurwitz.

"It was unclear to me what criterion was used to choose the district boundaries and definitely just making that more open and input. It doesn't rely on just one variable alone,” said Kurwitz.

An advisory committee, composed of about 40 people from parents to teachers looked at cost and the future of the schools. The proposal would lower enrollment at Bryan High School slightly and increase enrollment at Rudder High School.

Some coaches were for the changes.

"This will allow us to hopefully get with people that we can form some rivalries with. Bryan High, College Station, A&M Consolidated, Brenham, and get with these people and stay with these people,” said C.M. Pier, the Rudder High School head football coach.

The next step is for the advisory committee to talk about concerns brought up in the meeting and make any changes necessary to the proposal then present it to the school board for a vote.

The superintendent didn't give a timeline of when the vote will take place for the proposal, but he hopes to have a decision soon so students know which school they will be going to.
