COLLEGE STATION It's generally a pretty heated issue, but tonight's public forum on elementary school rezoning in College Station was very quiet. The College Station ISD Board of Trustees held one of three public forums which give parents an opportunity to voice their opinion on the proposed plan that takes into account a new elementary school under construction.
No one spoke up at Tuesday's meeting to address any concerns or ask questions about the proposed rezoning plan. The meeting lasted all of 15 minutes.
In front of a small group, the meeting began with an overview and timeline of the rezoning committee's recommendations and feedback gathered during the Spring. Last Fall, voters approved an 83 point five million dollar bond package which includes the construction of a ninth elementary school, Spring Creek Elementary currently under construction.
Anthony Birnbaum says he has a third grader at Forest Ridge who will be attending Spring Creek when it opens in August 2015. He understands the city's rapid growth and the need to build a new school to prevent overcrowding, but admits the changes will affect his family and the routine they've had in place for the last four year. He says, "I really would like to see her be able stay at her school be able to have transportation. She still rides the bus everyday, most times, whereas if this zone sticks the way it's presented than transportation won't be an option. This rezoning can't be easy for the people doing it, trying to figure out how to make it all work. I wouldn't begrudge them for the decisions they've made, but just seeing how it affects us and what we'd like to see."
Two more public meetings will be held. One this Thursday the College Station ISD Transportation Center on Rock Prairie Road at 5pm. The last meeting will be held September 10th at Noon also at the C-S-I-S-D Transportation Center.
The Board of Trustees could adopt the new zone plan at their regular meeting on September 16th.
