**UPDATE** A man convicted of dragging a donkey behind his vehicle got five years in prison as his sentence Wednesday in a Montgomery County courtroom.

A Montgomery County Jury sentenced Marc Saunders to five years for animal cruelty in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice for dragging and seriously injuring "Susie Q", the donkey in October of 2012.

A jury convicted the Splendora native Tuesday of animal cruelty for dragging the donkey with a rope tied to a trailer hitch on his SUV.

The state jail felony normally carries a sentence of between 180 days and two years in jail, or probation.

A Montgomery County Precinct 4 Livestock Constable arrested Saunders back in October 2012 following the incident.

The donkey, Suzie Q, who was badly hurt, was treated by a local veterinarian and survived.

The charges against Saunders were, at first, misdemeanors, but were upgraded to a felony because of evidence presented that he hurt the animal on purpose.
