Another new name has joined the race for District 14 in the Texas House.
Aggieland Bookstore founder John Raney announced his candidacy Wednesday to replace the resigning Fred Brown. He claimed his business acumen puts him in front in the race.
"We have to make sure that small business, in particular, has the freedom to grow," Raney said. "Taxation on business just stifles the economy."
Raney is the former chairman of the Brazos County Republican Party.
"I don't have any political baggage," he said. "I'm here to do the work of the people as best I can with the citizens' advice and consent."
Raney joins Neutral Posture CEO Rebecca Boenigk and former Brazos County Tax Assessor-Collector Buddy Winn in the District 14 race.
Former Aggie football star Seth McKinney dropped out of the race after being among the first to enter it.
Brown announced his resignation in order to pursue business interests in Temple.
