New research has found that the birth rate in the United States is the lowest it’s been since the 1920's. However, local birth statistics show the opposite to be true. City records show a record number of babies were born in College Station in 2012.

“We've had babies being born around the clock here. We're setting records every month,” said Dr. David Meduna, an Obstetrician at the College Station Medical Center.

City birth records show 1,913 babies were born in College Station in 2012. That’s almost 500 more births than the year before.

Dr. Meduna says the baby boom has kept the hospital very busy lately.

“It’s hard to keep up with staffs, nurses and rooms and everything else,” said Dr. Meduna.

Leslie and Caleb Holt had their first child, Cooper, at the College Station Medical Center in October.

“There were a lot of kids in the nursery…15 or 20 when we were there,” said Caleb Holt.

Cooper was one of the 209 babies born in October, according to the City Secretary’s Office.

The College Station City Secretary's office has noticed the same trend.

“This was the biggest year ever,” said Faye Scott, Deputy Registrar, “It was really busy especially the fall months.”

Scott handles birth certificates for the city.

So why did so many people have babies in College Station in 2012? The answer depends on who you ask...

“She talked me into it,” said Caleb Holt.
“And aren't you glad?,” asked his wife, Leslie.
“Ya, absolutely,” said Caleb,” said Caleb.

Records indicate the baby boom was limited to College Station.

The number of births in Bryan was slightly down in 2012.
