BRYAN- As the U.S. enters its second week in the government shutdown, new worries arise concerning a possible U.S. debt default. Congressman Bill Flores (R-District 17) says lawmakers are working to raise the debt ceiling to avoid any default as the U.S. rises out of an economic slump.

"Nobody in the house wants a default," said Flores Monday on Brazos Valley This Morning.

He said progress is being made at the Capitol, hopefully ending the impasse soon. President Barack Obama met with the Senate leaders over the weekend for negotiations.

"I'm hopeful the Senate has reached a conclusion," said Flores.

Flores said a solution to the shutdown is possible with the help of a proposal by the House. It would raise the debt ceiling through mid-November, allowing Congress to address possible reforms to mend the fiscal crisis.

"We have to try to sit down and deal with opening the government up, getting the debt ceiling resolved and also putting the county of a path of fiscal responsibility over the long term," Flores said. "Our goal is to have the federal government live within its means, but we aren't going to get there overnight."

He said the proposal would allow a balanced budget in about ten years, but first, the government has to end the shutdown.

"What we're telling the president is we want the country to get its ducks in a row," said Flores.
