The face of Downtown Bryan has been changing a lot over the last few years, and it's about to change again.
Residential properties are going in at a couple of locations. On Main Street, construction is underway on lofts. A few blocks away at the corner of 24th and Houston will be new town homes. A groundbreaking will be held Saturday for the BCS Modern Living development.
It's the first major residential development in the Downtown area in more than a quarter century.
Bryan Deputy City Manager Joey Dunn said this next step is a very important for downtown.
"The cities that have really been successful in revitalizing their downtown area is lots of residential, and you want people down here 24/7," Dunn said. "That's the kind of residential Chris (Lawrence, BCS Modern Living CEO) and his group are doing."
The groundbreaking will be at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at 503 E. 24th Street.
Since 2002, $25 million in infrastructure investment has helped make for a $98 million market value increase for downtown, according to the city. Nineteen new businesses have come to that part of town since 2010.
