Residents Opposed to Landfill Ask College Station City Council for Help

Updated: Thu 11:31 PM, Oct 11, 2012

A proposal by a private businessman to build a construction debris landfill just outside the College Station city limits brought a crowd to a city council meeting Thursday night.

About 80 people showed up to voice their opposition and ask the city for help.

The landfill would be built about two miles west of College Station just off Highway 60, and would take in about 400-to-800 tons of construction waste every day.

At the College Station City Council meeting Thursday night, some of those who live near the proposed site asked councilmembers to consider the ramifications of such a plan.

Concerned resident Argie Butler told councilmembers, "Just think about something like this in your backyard, and from what we were told it was going to increase traffic with these big dumptrucks."

Paul Viennes said, "Overall you have the responsibility of the image of College Station. This is certainly going to impact that image."

Some of the residents have expressed concern about the landfill being an eyesore.

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality has held hearings on the plan and will eventually make a decision on whether a permit will be granted.
