Runoff Candidates Meet in Forum

Candidates in a pair of races headed to July 31 primary runoffs participated in a candidate forum Tuesday night.

The Republican Women of the Brazos Valley hosted the event at the College Station Hilton. It was streamed live at KBTX.com and broadcast live on WTAW radio.

Prosecutor Jarvis Parsons and defense attorney David Hilburn are squaring off in the race for Brazos County district attorney. Parsons earned 48 percent of the vote in May's primary. Hilburn finished second in the four-person race with 22 percent. Since no candidate earned a majority of the total votes, a runoff was needed. The winner will all-but-assuredly become the next DA. No Democrat is running for the office. The winner replaces Bill Turner, who is retiring.

In the five-person May race for Texas House District 12 on the Republican side, Calvert rancher Tucker Anderson won 29.5 percent of the vote, with Brazos County rancher Kyle Kacal coming in second with 24 percent. The district includes mostly rural portions of Brazos County, eastern portions of McLennan County, and all of Robertson, Falls and Limestone Counties. Democrat Robert Stem of Waco awaits the winner of the runoff.

Early voting begins Monday.

(Note: due to technical issues, portions of the district attorney forum were not recorded. The majority of the forum is available in the video player.)
