Opening statements were made Tuesday in the murder trial of Christopher Hernandez, 22, accused in the 2011 shooting death of Billy Menard, Jr., in Bryan.

Hernandez is one of three men who investigators say was involved in the death of Menard, who was shot during a drug deal at the Wilde Oak Apartment complex on October 15th.

The other two charged were Clayton Thompson, and Travis Carroll of Bryan.

According to police reports, a witness at the scene claims Thompson fired the fatal shot. Carroll reportedly stated to police that around midnight on October 15th, he sold Menard a "baggie" of marijuana and Menard became angry that the drugs were not of a good quality.

In the police report, Carroll claims Menard kept the marijuana and refused to pay him, which led to the argument.

Clayton Thompson, of Bryan is already serving a sentence of forty five years for his role in the crime. Thompson accepted a plea deal in November 2012.

Travis Carroll is awaiting trial and remains in the Brazos County Jail without bond. His trial is expected to begin in July.
