A Hearne burglary suspect is recovering after being shot by a Hearne Police Officer.
News 3 spent Sunday afternoon in Hearne and learned the 20-year-old suspect is the son of a church pastor there.
News 3 spoke with the mom and dad and several family members of 20-year-old Benny Carroll Jr. who underwent surgery after being shot in the knee Saturday night after Hearne Police responded to a burglary in progress call at a home in Hearne.
The family tells us he's never been in trouble with the law before and they are still wanting answers on why their son was shot.
Sounds of gunfire rattled through the normally quiet streets of Hearne Saturday night.
Police responded to a burglary in progress call at 209 Hall Street after a neighbor called 911 to report activity at the vacant house.
One of the bullets even hit a neighboring home.
"They has spotlights over here, spotlights down at that street," said Ed Berg, who lives a few houses down on Barton Street.
He thought he heard firecrackers at first.
"We were sitting up in our sitting room upstairs and heard one sounded like a bang then we heard like a wooshing noise like a car taking off real fast then we heard four more bangs in succession," Berg added.
He knew something was wrong when more than 15 police cars rushed in.
"Real quiet neighborhood. We hadn't have any issues with break-ins or anything so this was something new," he said.
Hearne Police tell us Texas Rangers are taking the lead on the investigation after a Hearne officer shot at the suspect.
It's also standard procedure for the officer to be placed on paid leave during the investigation.
Police wouldn't say if Carroll was armed or not or if he tried to attack the officer.
Ed Berg's neighbor's door was damaged in the gunfire with a bullet going through the front door fragmenting against a wall inside.
"Nobody knows right now of course if that was a person's bullet, the person that was breaking into the house or if it was the police, so they are supposed to come take her door in the next day or two...This is the first time we've had problems here in the six years I've been here so it is normally pretty peaceful here," Berg said.
Benny Carroll Jr. is expected to recover after undergoing surgery for the bullet wound in his knee.
He was released from Saint Joseph Hospital in Bryan Sunday.
A family member told us he was arrested for criminal trespassing Sunday evening and they've already posted $10,000 bond to release him from custody.
Hearne Police tell us they are still trying to determine if anyone else was involved in the burglary.
Hearne Police have confirmed a shooting occurred in Hearne sometime Saturday evening.
Around 10:30 p.m., officers responded to a burglary in progress at a home in the 200 block of Hall Street.
When police arrived they located a suspect. Shots were fired and one person was injured.
At least one person was reportedly transported to St. Joseph's Hospital in Bryan with non-life threatening injuries.
Witnesses say Hearne Police and DPS troopers were on scene, which had blocked off traffic temporarily in the area of the shooting.
This incident is still under investigation by The Texas Rangers. Further details are not known.
