BRYAN, Texas A small group of Girl Scouts is working hard to make a big difference for children in need.
Four girls strong, Girl Scout Troop 9022 is working with the Brazos Valley Food bank to collect new or gently used backpacks. They've set up boxes around the Bryan/College Station area for anyone who wants to donate.
Lisa Cairns' daughter Leah is in the troop. She said the drive is for the troop's community service project, but the girls see it as more than just an award.
"For the girls, it's about understanding how you make a difference," said Cairns. "How you work with a larger organization, and how you work on a project that's going to have a meaningful impact."
The backpacks are collected and taken to the Brazos Valley Food Bank. The bags are then filled with food and taken to area schools to be handed out to kids.
Donations are coming in, but by no means at a staggering rate. At times, days can go by without a single donation. But Shannon Avila with the Brazos Valley Food Bank said these girls are still making a difference.
"Just like their motto says, every bag counts. Every bag that we can give to another child who needs one helps," said Avila.
Leah Cairns said she's excited about helping. She said the project is teaching her valuable life lessons.
"It takes a whole community. And it feels good to help," said Cairns.
"If I were in the same situation," said Girl Scout Elise Sawyer. "that backpack would definitely make me feel better about myself."
Donations will be accepted until the end of September.
