Social media web sites have become a helpful tool for owners who are looking for lost pets.

“It was the 4th of July, and I cracked open my door to reach out and grab something and the dog bolted out the door and ran,” said Cathryn Mayo. “I had notified the shelters, animal control, I posted ads on craigslist, the newspaper…I didn't know what else to do.”

Then Mayo heard about the Brazos Lost and Found Facebook page.

“A lot of times finding a lost pet requires interaction with the community. You have to find the one person that's found the pet,” said Heather Matthewson, Brazos Lost and Found Facebook administrator. “Someone could pick up a dog in one place and move them to another. I check all the stuff in Houston, I check Austin, I check Dallas.”

Matthewson spends hours each day posting pictures of lost pets, looking through pictures of found pets and trying to find matches. Matthewson is one of 5 volunteer "matchmakers" in Brazos County.

“One thing this page does is it allows owners to move on their lives while we'll continue looking for them in the background,” said Matthewson.

The Brazos Lost and Found Facebook “matchmakers” have reunited owners with their pets months after they disappeared.

“Every time I get discouraged, every time I wonder if I'm ever going to see him again, she tells me its ok...dogs have been gone for much longer...he'll find his way home again,” said Mayo. She is still looking for her missing dog, Buddy.
