Statement from Kean Register:

"I continue to be busy with issues at the City of Bryan; I really don’t spend much time on BTU matters. I was aware that my position was eliminated but I still hope that I’d be able to go back at some point, hopefully in the General Manager position. I’ve told council I’m happy here until that opportunity presents itself. "

Multiple sources tell News 3 that Bryan Texas Utilities has eliminated one of its top executive positions held by Kean Register, and that he isn't being reassigned.

Register has been the interim city manager of the City of Bryan since September 2010, and has told News 3 on numerous occasions that he has no desire to hold the city manager position full-time. He has said his intent was to return to BTU once a new city manager was found, but has no job to go back to now.

Register has been employed by Bryan since 2000 according to the city's website, and had served as interim city manager once before back in 2006 before returning to BTU.

After David Watkins resigned as city manager 19 months ago, Register was brought back as the interim, in part, because he had held the job previously.

Bryan Mayor Jason Bienski tells News 3 he believes the city council is happy with the job Register is doing, that he can hold the position as long as he'd like, and that there is no active search on-going for a permanent city manager. Bienski says if Register were to leave, the city would look internally for a permanent manager.

We asked BTU for comment on Register's termination, but they did not address it at all in a statement to us Wednesday. Instead, their statement says, "With the changes in customer service and the installation of smart meters, we have done some reorganizing to serve our customers more efficiently."
