HUNTSVILLE, Texas It's a first in Huntsville, and officials say the new stand-alone emergency room will help change health care in the area for the better.
The Physicians ER, located just off I-45 near Montgomery Road, opened its doors to the public in early October.
Amy Antley is the nurse manager for the facility. A Huntsville native, she said she's glad to be back working in the town she loves. She said the building they're in now has a long history in the town.
"This is an old Ford dealership," said Antley. "I remember growing up, getting cars serviced and having this dealership here."
The emergency room is equipped with 14 patient rooms, X-ray and CT scan rooms, a full pharmacy and an in-house lab.
Doctor Larry Till is the medical director at the facility. He said their emergency room is competition for the other health care providers in town. And that's a good thing for patients.
"Competition is always good for the public," said Till. "The public always benefits from more emergency rooms (because) there are more choices."
Officials said they designed the emergency room with the patient in mind. The room offers free Wi-Fi, a coffee bar and other amenities. Antley said the purpose was to help patients feel at ease.
"Patients are usually scared and nervous enough when they come to the emergency room," said Antley. "We wanted to create an environment that was more calming."
Till says there are plans to build a dialysis center, an outpatient imaging center and possibly a physical therapy center in the same complex.
