Members of the Brazos-Robertson Counties Medical Alliance (BRCMA) recently awarded the 2013 Associate Degree of Nursing (ADN) Medical Scholarship to Blinn College’s Sadie DiStefano, of Bryan.
The availability of the ADN scholarship was announced in January, and any Blinn or Texas A&M University ADN student with a 3.5 GPA was eligible to apply. The financial award is given by a non-profit organization consisting of physicians’ spouses who seek to provide support for the local medical community.
“I first heard about the scholarship through a friend in January, and I thought it would be something I should apply for,” DiStefano said. “Even after I applied, Professor Michael Hutton (Nursing) brought it to my attention and also recommended I apply, so I knew it was something I should do.”
DiStefano, who plans to work at the College Station Medical Center after graduation, said part of her inspiration to become a nurse came from her father.
“My dad is a physician, so I wanted to pursue a career in the medical field that would allow me to spend plenty of time with patients,” DiStefano said. “I also plan to get my Bachelor of Nursing in the near future.”
DiStefano cited Blinn’s high quality reputation for nursing and the school’s proximity to her hometown as the reasons she selected the College’s ADN program.
“I’m from Bryan, and I really like it here,” DiStefano said. “At Blinn, I can learn more without having to go far away.”
The $1,000 scholarship will supplement toward DiStefano’s Summer and Fall tuition, coming in time to help her graduate in December.
“I am very grateful for this scholarship, and I’m glad to be at Blinn,” DiStefano said. “I look forward to working in the hospital soon.”
