Texas A&M University is looking at private companies to take over their golf course after losing thousands of dollars in the past few years.

A university official, who doesn't want to be identified, tells News 3 that the golf course has lost $600,000 in the past four years.

The 18-hole golf course is played on by students and residents in the Brazos Valley like Bob Palmarez.

"I've seen how it used to be when it wasn't maintained very well, so anytime we play golf, we try to support something like this so they can continue to maintain it and keep the fees lower, so that these kids here can have a reasonable price to play golf,” said Palmarez.

The price to play could be going up. The university official says A&M is looking at one private company to come in and renovate the course. The goal for this course is to look similar to local golf courses like Traditions Club.

Although the golfer’s eyes are on the target, they also notice the improvements needed in the clubhouse and the course.

"The cart paths [need improvement] and continuing to maintain and upgrade the greens. That is really important,” said Palmarez.

"There is always space for improvement. If everything is going to be better than that would be great,” said Clotide Chen, a Texas A&M student who plays golf on the university’s golf course.

The university official tells us they haven't signed a contract yet, but plan to in the next couple of months. They hope to have a company start renovating the grass and irrigation system by the summer.
