News 3 has learned Jason Maines,17, has died.
Maines was the driver of the Dodge Stratus that drove the wrong way on Highway 6 on December 31, 2011.
At approximately 7:30 a.m. on December, 31, officers with the College Station Police Department responded to a major accident in the 4000 block of State Highway 6 South. During their preliminary investigation, officers learned that a deputy with the Brazos County Sheriff’s Office had attempted to make contact with Maines, who was stopped at a green light at the intersection of Deacon Drive and Texas Avenue. The deputy walked up to the vehicle and knocked on the driver’s side window of Maines’ Stratus. Maines appeared to wake up and upon seeing the deputy at his window, fled south on Highway 6 on the northbound side of the highway.
As Maines neared the 4000 block of Highway 6 South he struck a tractor trailer carrying a load of hay. The impact with the tractor trailer was head on and caused the rig and its load to catch on fire. The driver of the tractor trailer, Larry Majewski, 41, was able to escape from the rig before it caught on fire.
Both Maines and Majewski were taken to the College Station Medical Center.
Majewski suffered non-life threatening injuries.
