Sheriff’s Deputies were called to the 3000 block of South U.S. Highway 77, south of Rockdale, early Friday afternoon in reference to a man who had discharged a gun outside his residence and then locked himself inside his bathroom closet.

Sheriff’s Deputy Larry Morgan was first on the scene and was able to communicate briefly with the 64 year old man who was identified as Elmer Weller.

Mr. Weller demanded that he be left alone and refused to come out of the bathroom.

Sheriff Greene and several other deputies aided by Texas Highway Patrol Trooper David Yarborough secured the area, and continued to try and negotiate with the man. After almost two hours Mr. Weller finally began to talk through the door to Sheriff Greene.

He surrendered to Sheriff Greene shortly thereafter and was transported to Scott and White for a mental evaluation.
