TYLER -- Congressman Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) was a guest on Fox News Sunday with Chris Wallace Sunday to talk about the growing movement toward gun control after recent mass shootings.

After several days of digesting what happened in Newtown, Connecticut Congressman Louie Gohmert said he was tired of giving criminals the opportunity to attack in places where no one can defend themselves.

"They choose [places like schools]," Gohmert said. "They know no one will be armed."

Gohmert cited statistics showing that most of these massacres happen in places where you check your gun at the door.

"Hearing the heroic stories of the principle lunging, trying to protect," Gohmert began, "I wish to God she had had an M4 in her office locked up so when she heard gunfire she pulls it out and she didn't have to lunge heroically with nothing in her hands but she takes him out, takes his head off before he can kill those precious kids."

"I suppose you could take it a step further and she should have intensive weapons training and a black belt in karate in case it comes to hand-to-hand combat," Smith County Democratic Party Chairman David Henderson said."I think you can make a logical case that nobody needs a fully automatic assault rifle."

Henderson said Gohmert should be focusing on more preventative security for schools and funding mental health programs.

"Unless we treat mental illness as a disease and not a stigma, then these things are going to continue," Henderson said.

"If you were in a situation the other day or any other situation, you'd want somebody there with a gun or you'd want to have a gun," Colton Bunch, a supporter of guns on campus said.

Bunch and fellow supporter Joseph Williams worry that trying to keep guns out of the hands of those mental issues is a losing battle that could be won a lot more easily.

"What this guy did was a coward act," Williams said. "So if he believed for one second that someone else in that building might have had a gun, he being a coward himself wouldn't have been in there."
