The candidates hoping to represent Brazos County in the Texas House of Representatives met Monday in a candidates forum.
Incumbent Republican John Raney and Democrat Judy LeUnes are vying for the District 14 seat, which will represent much of Bryan/College Station in the upcoming legislative session. It would be the first full term for either person. Raney, a local bookstore owner, won the unexpired term of Fred Brown in a special election last year, defeating four other candidates, including LeUnes, a retired educator and education consultant.
The newly-drawn District 12 will have its first representative, either Republican Kyle Kacal or Democrat Robert Stem. Kacal is a Brazos County rancher. Stem is an attorney in Waco from Falls County. District 12 represents the rural portions of Brazos and McLennan Counties, and in between, covers Robertson, Limestone and Falls Counties.
The Bryan/College Station Chamber of Commerce hosted the event at the College Station Hilton, and it was broadcast live on WTAW and streamed live at KBTX.com. WTAW's Scott DeLucia moderated the discussions.
A forum featuring candidates for Bryan city council and Bryan ISD school board will take place next Monday at Briarcrest Country Club in Bryan. It will also air on WTAW and stream live at KBTX.com starting at 6:00 p.m.
Early voting begins Monday. Election Day is November 6.
