Texas A&M University has once again been recognized as one of the most veteran-friendly universities in the country by Military Times Edge magazine.
In making the announcement, the magazine stated it began in the spring by polling student veterans on what they consider the most important school services for vets. As a result of the survey, the magazine rankings focus on academic accreditation, central veterans' offices and staff knowledgeable on veterans' issues.
The military-oriented publication awarded “veteran friendly” designation to 97 colleges throughout the country and has posted its “Best for Vets: Colleges ranking” list online at http://militarytimesedge.com/projects/best-for-veterans/best-colleges-for-veterans/2011/.
Most people would not find the Texas A&M’s “veteran friendly” designation surprising because the university’s Corps of Cadets, accounting for more than 2,000 of the approximately 50,000 students on campus, is the largest uniformed organization on any campus in the country and produces more officers for the military than any other institution, except for the service academies, records indicate.
In addition, the Texas A&M University System has established a system-wide Military-Friendly Initiative for its 11 universities, seven state agencies and health science center.
Texas A&M received “military friendly” designation by G.I. Jobs magazine in 2009 for its participation in the nation’s new GI Bill and related activities, an honor that university officials welcomed while pointing out the institution has been “military friendly” and a major contributor to the military since its opening 135 years ago. The Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges program also formally recognized Texas A&M in 2009 for its efforts to make it easier for veterans and military personnel to obtain an education.
