Who knew a simple wood burning grill could have so much power over people.
Family gatherings are created, shared and celebrated here all for one reason.
"They put out some of the best BBQ you could ever want to wrap your lips around," said Ronnie Davidoff, who goes to the restaurant every year with his family.
The folks at the New Zion Missionary Baptist Church know their BBQ, after all they've been doing it for over 40 years.
That's when Annie Ward started serving the sauce that's known around the world.
"She said there is no secret. We just don't tell anybody," joked Reverend Clinton Edison.
Edison has been in charge of Church BBQ ever since Ward "went home" to Heaven.
"We have not changed one thing. Everything she did the way she did it, we do exactly the same. It has been and continues to be quite a blessing to us and the church," said Edison.
"If I described the taste of the BBQ, I wouldn't have enough words to put it in the right context," said patron Arthur Hill.
Hill grew up in Huntsville but now he has to travel far to get a taste of home.
"I read a magazine in San Francisco talking about this being one of the best BBQ places in Texas. I had never been here before, so I came by and I've been coming for the past 5 or 6 years now," said Hill who now lives in California.
"We have literally fed people from all over the world. And that speaks volumes for the type of food you're serving," said Edison.
Johann Schuster is from Germany and owns a fine dining restaurant in Houston. His palate can handle the most complicated foods but for some reason, Texas BBQ just hits the spot.
"For a chef, it's very exciting. Texas BBQ especially because they know how to handle their meat and they know how to handle their fire. It's a different approach to simple things done right," said Schuster.
But if you do want to try the simple BBQ done right, The New Zion Missionary Baptist Church BBQ joint is only open three days a week and never on Sunday.
"If you can't get your fix in in three days, you're just going to have to wait till the next week," said Edison with a laugh.
