Town of Jewett Lays Off Two Workers Because of Budget Shortfall

The town of Jewett in Leon County Monday night layed off two workers, including a police officer, because of budget problems.

Jewett Mayor Becky Hughes told News 3 that Officer Daniel Cheney and part-time city clerk Nicole Johnson were layed off with 2 weeks severance because of a budget shortfall.

But Mayor Hughes couldn't say how much of a shortfall the town is facing.

The town is now down to a police chief and one officer.

Another budget meeting is scheduled for August 31 to determine if any other cutbacks are needed.
