We will keep you all posted on any updates.

A train derailment in Jewett has closed down highway 79.

Leon County Sheriff’s officials tell us six rail cars jumped the tracks along the railroad that runs along Highway 79 in Jewett. The scene is near the Nucor Steel Plant in Jewett.

We’re told this happened around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday. Emergency crews are on scene trying to figure out how and why it happened. No injuries are being reported at this time. We’ll bring you more information as soon as it becomes available.

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has closed US 79, just south of Jewitt at the Nucor Plant, because of train derailment. At this time they do not know how long US 79 will be closed. Officials are estimating around 8 hours.

TxDOT is setting up a detour around the derailment. The detour of US 79 will be to FM 39, to FM 3501, to FM 1512, back onto US 79.
