The Texas Department of Transportation is looking at ways to improve what some call a dangerous stretch of highway.
Highway 6 in Robertson County, from Hearne to Texas O.S.R., has had several fatal accidents in recent years.
TxDOT made improvements to that part of the highway in 2008, but there could be more.
These improvements are something Leilani Mack has been wanting for several years.
“[It’s] very scary if it's bad weather,” said Mack who drives on Highway 6 every day to get to work.
She says she has seen several fatalities in the past 5 years on the 12- mile part of Highway 6. Including the most recent one last Thursday when a vehicle hydroplaned and was hit by an 18-wheeler on Highway 6, three miles south of Hearne. Three people died in the crash, including a five-year-old.
"The pavement has scored well in the past. The problem that we are having is that when we have a downpour, all of our roadways are going to get slick no matter if they have P.F.C. on them or not,” said Bob Colwell, TxDOT Bryan public information officer.
P.F.C. is permeable friction course, a mix that was added to the pavement on that stretch of road back in 2008 to reduce the risk of hydroplaning and improving overall ride quality. But since the P.F.C. was added, that part of the highway is still a hot spot for fatal accidents.
The fact is the highway has 2 lanes of traffic side by side and no median barrier.
"We would love to widen all of our roadways and have a divided highway everywhere, but unfortunately we just don't have the funds,” said Colwell.
So TxDOT's construction department from Austin came to the location to review the pavement and make recommendations.
TxDOT says recommendations from the construction department in Austin should be made in the next couple of weeks.
