Utilities Going Down After Plaza Implosion

Updated: Mon 4:09 AM, May 21, 2012

The countdown is on as the Plaza Hotel will be imploded this Thursday, but the building isn't the only thing we will be seeing coming down.

"We'll have new water lines, new sewer lines, new electric lines, new telephone, new cable and new gas. I think every utility is covered being new,” said Veronica Morgan, a civil engineer with the implosion project.

New utilities won't look like the old ones you currently see near the Plaza Hotel on the corner of Texas Avenue and University Drive. They will all be underground.

"We will be rerouting utilities making room for these new building footprints, and the new parking garage footprints because we don't like to put utilities underneath those facilities. We will be rerouting those to their own utility corridor locations,” said Morgan.

Cleaning up debris, like glass and concrete, from the implosion should take several weeks. Then it will be time for the new construction.

“What you will see first is some underground work being worked on. So that means lots of trenching machines that will be coming in and putting pipe underground,” Morgan said.

Next, two parking garages will be built this summer and then the construction of apartments and retail will begin in the fall.
