A 35-year-old Anderson man is dead after his vehicle was found upside down in the Navasota River early Thursday morning.

The driver has been identified as Richard Denton Caldwell.

DPS and Brazos County officials were dispatched just before 1 A.M. to the scene in the 13000 of Long Trussell Road near the Grimes-Brazos County line.

According to DPS, his 2004 Volkswagon somehow left the roadway and became trapped inside of his car in the river.

Officials discovered the driver dead inside the car.

Details surrounding his death are unclear, but officials say the driver may have been unfamiliar with the area.

DPS officials believe the accident happened around 8:30 P.M Wednesday night but that his vehicle wasn't noticed until hours later.
