The amnesty period, held twice each year, allows citizens with outstanding warrants to avoid paying a $50 per case warrant fee if fines are paid in full.
In an effort to clear thousands of collectively outstanding warrants totaling millions of dollars from the City of College Station and the offices of the Brazos County justices of the peace, a warrant amnesty period will occur Feb. 10-28.
The amnesty period, held twice each year, allows citizens with outstanding warrants to avoid paying a $50 per case warrant fee if fines are paid in full. No partial payment schedules will be allowed if citizens want to avoid the $50 fee. The City of College Station accepts cash, cashier’s check, credit cards, money orders, and personal checks. Outstanding warrants cannot be paid via College Station’s online citation payment system.
“My biggest goal, and the reason why we do the amnesty, is to get people to come into the court and avoid going to jail,” Judge Edward Spillane said. “In March, we're part of the statewide warrant roundup event, and there's a good chance of being arrested. Lots of cities do the roundup without ever offering amnesty. In College Station, we think the amnesty period is important — and it's worked well — because restitution can be made, a little money can be saved, and jail time can be avoided.”
Since 2007, the City of College Station has cleared 4,938 warrants valued at more than $1.5 million through its annual amnesty events.
Local Warrant Roundup
Law enforcement officials across Texas, including the City of Bryan, will conduct a "warrant roundup" March 1-10. City marshals, police officers, reserve police officers and constables will arrest citizens who failed to pay their fines during the designated amnesty period.
Warrants on the Web
The College Station Municipal Court publishes a list of all outstanding warrants at cstx.gov/warrants, which allows anyone to check their warrant status if a citation was issued by the College Station Police Department.
