GRIMES COUNTY, Texas A woman says she's seen animals abandoned and left for dead far too often along a stretch of Highway 90.
Sharon Kolenda is a bus driver for Anderson and Shiro. Her route takes her along a stretch of Highway 90 north of Anderson every day.
"I see everything up and down these roads, and this is like the fourth set of animals that I've seen dumped," said Kolenda.
Recently, she noticed two dogs abandoned along the road. One lived, but the other strayed too close to the road and was hit and killed by a passing vehicle.
"Pretty little dogs. It just breaks my heart," said Kolenda.
Kolenda leaves food and water for the remaining dog, who's still too shy to come close to her.
"I come out here every afternoon and take care of it," said Kolenda. "I'm going to try and make it my little friend and take it home."
Sheriff Don Sowell with the Grimes County Sheriff's Department said this is a despicable crime.
"It is against the law, but it's hard to catch these people because, like I said, they're cowards," said Sowell.
Sowell said pet owners will drive to secluded locations late at night, drop the animals off and race back home. He said he's seen all kinds of abandoned animals.
"If they took the effort to find a home for it, it would be better. But sad to say, they run loose and have to adapt to the environment. If they survive," said Sowell.
Sowell said they take this type of crime very seriously. He said if you see someone dropping off an animal, get a license plate number and take pictures if you can. Every piece of information can help law enforcement officers to catch the person responsible.
If you're caught abandoning an animal, you could be fined up to $1,000 and spend up to a year in jail.
