Bush Calls For Lifting Ban, Chides Congress On Policies

WHITE HOUSE (AP) - President Bush says skyrocketing gas and oil
prices should make it clear to Congress that the U.S. needs to
boost domestic oil production.
At the White House today, he renewed a call for lawmakers to
lift a 27-year-old ban on offshore drilling before they take summer
recess.
Bush says offshore drilling could yield up to 18 billion barrels
of oil over time. He admits the move would take years to have full
effect.
The president also accused Congress of directly contributing to
consumers' pain at the pump. He says that lawmakers' opposition to
his energy policies has "helped drive gas prices to record
levels."
Congressional Democrats have already rejected Bush's latest call
to lift the ban.
